Murder Mystery, part 5

The murderer and I ended up in Ecstacy.  He cowardly ran away, like a coward.

While looking for a way back to Sigil, I desecrated a temple of the Sisters of Mercy.  The temple clerk taught me to return to Sigil, I must go to the garden and think of a memory of dizziness and walk through the (arch?).

There's a murder in the tavern in Ecstacy.  The tavern and inn is called The Impulsive Dabus.  The murder victim was a Baldog the dwarf.  He had 9 slashes.

Artemor is the halfling at the gate from Ecstacy to Sigil.

We go to Revel Hall, which has fine wines, mule kicking meads, deep romances.  It's run by Madame Milany, who is always veiled and hooded.  It's surrounded by beautiful gardens of humans and humanoid creatures.

Trollon is in Curst now.  To reach Curst, from Sigil, go to the Ascension drinking hall - the front door.  The key is a wooden triangle inscribed with a cage.

We decide to go to Curst.  ... then we see Sougad on the street and chase him.

We arrive at a recently renovated temple.  We think Sougad went inside.

Murder Mystery, part 4

Ecstasy portal - We found a portal to Sigil from Ecstasy.  It is located in the Lower Ward - portal to Ecstacy (this is sufficient information for us to get back).

Key from Ecstasy to Sigil is a freshly picked, ripe olive.

We found this portal by some pilgrims who stepped out of it.  They are going to a festival in Bloodgem Park tomorrow from light start to light end.  They heard the words of Trollon the Beloved.

----------------------------------------------------------------

When going to the murder location of the Haromonium member, we saw the murderer look at us from the shadows.  We chased him, but eventually lost him.  As we lost him, we stumbled across a streetfight between a Cambion and six others.  The six were dying.

We saved the lives of two who were unconscious and bleeding out.  Three died.  The one who never fell unconscious was Anbar, factol of the Believers of the Source.  During the fight, Anbar was robbed of his "plenarity."

'If you see that man again, I would very much appreciate if you could return it to me.  It's a family heirloom of mine.  It appears to be a deep blue sphere, perfectly smooth and round that fits in the palm of a hand.  If it's returned to me, I will give you a reward of 500 jinx."

If we find any information on the thieves, we should let Anbar know.

While we have Anbar here, we ask him about the Godsman who was murdered recently.  The guy murdered was "poor old favur."  "He was found in his hovel in Bloodboil.  We can take you there now.  I can have Xena show you old Favur's hovel."

----------------------------------------------------------------

We meet Xena and she says "He [Favur] used to be the custodian of Harbringer house.  Harbringer house is a house we keep for some of our members to stay in.  Favur, he retired from his post as custodian, and we were arranging for a more permanent home for him.  He was staying at this hovel for a while."  She takes us to the hovel.  It's a very simple, small dwelling.

Searching the hovel, we find four objects jammed into a crack in the hovel's wall.  They are a white feather and three opened nutshells - an almond shell and two walnut shells.  The feather has no ink on the tip.  Xena identifies the feather as a chicken feather.

Eltiva first found the murder scene.  We brought her in for information.  She's an old gnome woman and worked as Favur's housekeeper.  "The scene was terrible.  Poor old Favur, he was 80 years old.  I found him in his sleeping robe.  He had a terrified expression on his face.  He had a terrible cut across his abdomen.  There was a piece of parchment on his body, but I didn't go close enough to check.  On the wall, written maybe in blood, it said 'now it begins'.  I... I think it was the first of these terrible murders."  Favur was a human.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Julian of the 9th test, male githyanki (i.e. 9th incarnation).  The murderer of Lennie - what can you tell us about it?  "She was found on a smashed table.  She had, shockingly, three slashes and a look of fear etched on her face.  A parchment note pinned to her tunic that read "Chaos is the only law, washed clean in the blood of order".  She was often in the room by herself that had the smashed table.  Strangely, I found three nutshells on the floor under the table.  Two peanut shells and a walnut shell."

----------------------------------------------------------------

We decide to walk to Loggue's Bath Powder.  On our way there, we cross the path of the Lady of Pain Adorers.  They are preaching to the street, advertising the Lady of Pain's party at bloodgem park.

In the lower ward, not far from the armory, we arrive at Loggue's Bath Powder.  By the time we get there, it is closed for the night.  We break in, and find a gnome living behind a stack of boxes in the warehouse.  He has among his possessions a coinpurse with an emblem of the godsmen.  The purse belonged to the tiefling who was dead on a broken table.

----------------------------------------------------------------

We decide to go to Grossif's Paints.  As usual, it's closed and we pick the lock.

As usual, we find some dark corner.  Baretta checks it out.  She finds a makeshift bed, papers, etc.  Nobody is present now.

We go in.  There is a jar that contains black and purple analids.  They are dead and preserved.  There is a scroll that contains a map of sigil.  In the jug is a dark red liquid that smells of alcohol.

The female dwarf Narcovy, comes.  We get her to come and she investigates, sketches, measures the footprints.  She's one of the good guys, but I need to push her to become great.  She doesn't have the heart for investigation like I do.

Two murders last night.  One had eight slashes, the other had three.  Baretta's ring was found at the crime scene with three slashes.  I fear that Baretta may be working with them.  She has never been worthy of much trust......

Transcription of Factol Ambar's notes

Sougad Lawshredder

This power-in-the-making came to my attention almost a decade ago when he committed a series of grisly murders here in the Cage.  For seven days, Sougad stalked, terrorized, and killed members of factions who had a lawful outlook on the multiverse.  The only clues in the case pertained to the peculiar methods of death-dealing.

Each of the 11 victims was terrified at the time of his death.  Each murder was committed using the same weapon, a large metal blade believed to be a long sword.  Sougad inflicted a number of slashes to equal the number of the victim.  The first victim was killed with a single slash of the sword, while the eleventh victim received 11 slashes.  He always left a note written with the victim's blood on the finest grade of parchment, reading: "Chaos is the only law, washed clean in the blood of order."

Incidental evidence alerted me to the fact that we weren't dealing with an ordinary barmy.  Some victims had been buried by a discharge of magical energy, and the few times that the Harmonium or the Mercykillers closed in on the stalker, they were frightened off by supernatural means.  I ordered a special team of Believers to track down the murderer.  I wanted him for Harbringer House - even evil powers need a place to develop before they ascend.  The team got lucky, I must admit, and stumbled across Sougad as he was about to enter a twelfth name in the dead-book.

During my work to bring him the knowledge of ascension, I learned some important information about Sougad Lawshredder.  He came from the prime world of Toril, where he was the ward of an evil wizard.  He came to Sigil for a definite purpose - to become a power of chaos and murder.  Sougad has certain innate abilities that identify him as a power-to-be.  He can cause fear, know alignment, and produce the effects of shocking grasp.  He is resistant to magical effects himself, and any long-sword he uses to commit a murder immediately becomes an enchanted law slayer weapon.  His murders follow a definite pattern and are part of an elaborate ritual that he believes will elevate him to godhood.  He refuses to provide details, but it appears that the ritual did unlock additional abilities in Sougad, even though it went unfinished (he needs to commit 13 murders to complete the rite.)  Strangely enough, Sougad also likes to eat Abyssal leeches.

In the decade since we started working with him, Sougad's innate abilities have grown stronger.  His hatred for law and order was not abated, however.  I fear that he'll never develop into a good being, but that isn't our concern.  When he reaches the full state of powerhood, we'll release him to find his place in the multiverse.

My greatest worry is Sougad's constant threats toward myself [sic] and those who follow the ways of law.  He believes that something monumental will occur after he's spilled the life blood of 13 lawful beings.  He can't wait to return to that task, so he'll have to remain in Harbinger House.  Of course, I may be hindering a potential power by preventing Sougad from making his 13 kills, but that's not something I want to contemplate right now.

Trolan the Mad

Trolan of Ecstasy came to Sigil following a dream most consider to be evidence of an addle-coved mind.  I agree, but it also shows Trolan's place as a power-to-be.  He grew up in the Outlands town of Ecstasy, where as a young tiefling he developed the skills of a bard.  Early on, he also showed signs of powerhood, for he developed innate abilities not commonly available to mortal cutters.  When the young bard first heard the tales of the Lady of Pain, his future course became apparent - he wanted to win the Lady's love and devotion.

As anyone who's spent event a little time in the Cage knows, the lady doesn't want devotion or worship.  The rules are clearcut: Worship her and earn a fast, painful trip to the dead-book.  The warnings didn't stop Trolan, however, and he arrived in Sigil six years ago to offer the Lady his heart.  He sang of his love in taverns and on street corners, hoping to prove his worth.  Those who heard him fled in terror of the Lady's impending wrath, and many bashers tried to silence him before the Lady did it herself.

Days passed, and Trolan remained alive and unflayed.  The Cagers around him still kept a fair distance, afraid that when the Lady's shadow fell upon the bard, they'd be caught by its sharp edges.  Eventually, the Mercykillers decided to punish Trolan for his flagrant disregard of Sigil's customs.  But when they found him, they discovered that a group of dabus has surrounded the bard.  The dabus carried him away, apparently ending the threat to Sigil's order.  For me, it was only the beginning.

The dabus brought Trolan to Harbringer House.  We took him in, for it was rare indeed for the Lady's servants to bring anyone to us, let alone a barmy who seemed destined to be trapped in the mazes or flayed by the Lady's blades.  Intrigued by Trolan's case, I listened to his ballads, heard the love in his voice, and discovered innate abilities that marked him as a power-to-be.  He can use the following spell-like abilities without reciting arcane words or tossing around mystical components: charm person, friends, suggestion, and emotion.  He has a natural resistance to magical effects.  He is also a friendly, good soul who will make a splendid power when he finally ascends the ladder of existence.

If not for his fatal attraction to the Lady of Pain, he wouldn't be in our care.  To profess such feelings with obvious sincere emotion and not meet instant destruction shows me that even the Lady recognizes how special Trolan is.  Still, we can't have him disturbing the Cage, so he remains our guest at Harbringer House until he finds a way to curb his feelings and desires.  After all, he won't achieve his place as a power if he forces the object of his affections to put him in the dead-book.

Murder Mystery, Part 3

We head to the bakery where the murder is to happen tonight.

Bareta and break into the bakery to wait for the murderer there.  Olivera, Calminion, and I wait outside the baker.  We loudly debate the great unknown while we wait for anti-peak.

The watch from the tower calls out "Anti-peak and all is well."  The gate opens a group of armored humans come out and split up.  One is heading across - from the prison to a tavern across the street.  As the armored man, a mercy killer, crosses the square, 50 feet from us springs out

We met the killer who was killing the mercy killer outside the prison.  The Mercy Killer's name is Colts.  During the fight, Colts was killed and as usual the killer took some blood and disappeared.  Borg was scared during the fight and forced to run away.

After the fight, more Mercy Killers came and questioned the party - except for Borg.  Borg shows up shortly later and corroborates the story.

We travel with the Mercy Killers to the Harmonium's headquarters, the city barracks.  We meet with the chief investigator, a female named Narkovy.  After an hour, the female dwarf Harmonium Officer Narkovy comes out.  She is carrying a little notebook and introduces herself as the chief investigator of the murder spree.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

day 4:

We walk down the street with Kylie on the way to Fiends Emporium(!?!) and some minotaur is following us.  The psionic turns around and we try to cast "charm" on the minotaur.  The minotaur asks some question in broken english like "where about the murders are you?"  It frowns and says: "That did … you why?"

"Reach …blahblabheaobea"

> Psionic psycrystal asks the minotaur by mind-talk: "Why are you following us, friend?"
Minotaur responds: "You've been investigating these murders.  I'm curious as to what you've learned."
> "Yes, we're actually investigating those murders.  What's your interest?"
"No, but people want to blame us.  We want to find out what's going on."
> "Who is blaming you?"
"Harmonium doesn't like us."
> "So you or your people think they're bias?
"Well, they just don't like us!  We want freedom.  Freedom and randomness and they don't like that".
> "Fair enough.  But do you have any information about those murders?"
"What do you know about the murderer?  And why is he murdering people?"
> "He's doing some sort of ritual."
"Why?"
> "We're not sure.  If you know someone who would know about this sort of thing, maybe you can help us."
"Well, we could go talk to a big boss."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Freeforall is my name"
> "Can you help us identify the murderer's ritual?"
"turn it around.  Do the ritual against him.  Change it.  Change the ritual."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

On our walk to the Friendly Fiend, we saw some Dabbas with nets and clubs.  They seem to be chasing after small animals and capturing them in nets and clubbing them.  There are no small animals visible.  According to Freeforall, this behavior is the wonder of chaos!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

On our walk to the thing, we hear halflings talking:

"These murders are due to a new faction called the Overbloods.  They are actually a collection of factions.  There's going to be a faction war and this is just a prelude."

Finally!  We arrive at Pendram's Parchments and Papers.  It's a warehouse with a sign on the front."

We look through the list of customers.  On the day of the murder with the talc powder, they had Jaymes come by to collect a shipment of parchment.  She's human with grey hair, plump face.

I take a sample of the talc powder for verification.  Beretta takes a sheet from the customer list.

Outside the building we notice a board out of place.  If we pull the board aside, there's a 10x10 foot region inside the warehouse with some bones and dirt on the floor.  There's a big mass of shredded paper in the corner.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

We next go to Grossif's paints.

Murder Mystery, part 2

New characters:

Fasa the Guvnor - Dead by murder
Tenscore the hardhead - Dead by murder
Lennie the Godsmen - Dead by murder
Kesto - Runs the athar bookstore
Sir Cleave - assistant of Kesto
Harlique - Raving woman who has visions of the murders

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reconvene with Kylie

We ran onto Kylie on the road.  She told us there's six murders now: the three we already know about, and Fasa the Guvnor (member of the Fraternity of Order), Tenscore the hardhead, Lennie the Godsmen.

The Fraternity of Order is offering a reward for the capture or killing of the person responsible and proof the individual or group were responsible.  ~10,000 jinx.

Kylie taught us the rule of three:

The rule of three - everything comes in three

The other two rules are:
Rule of rings - everything is a ring
Center of the universe - whereever you are, you're the center of the universe

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friendly fiend shop

Wears bladed head icon around his neck.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Commerce library

studying late a few nights ago.  He was studying scrolls pertaining to the topics of planar trade consortium laws.

The guy was killed in the court library.  In the library, all the books and shelves were pushed to the corner of the library.  The cleaning people were cleaning nonstop for two days.

Beretta found the book "Powers and Demipowers" because the cleaners were endlessly cleaning this book.  There's blood stains on it - it's on one chapter, called Divine Ascension.  It discusses how mortals can rise to become Powers.

Some harmonium officers come in an question us.  I tell them we're a member of the Athar.

The Harmonium officers tell us that the murder victims died of slicing wounds.

[We later found out this was the 4th murder.]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kellock the grey was found dead in an Athar bookstore, called The Parted Veil, found on Forgotten Lane.  The store is run by Kestow Brighteyes.

Kesto is the book owner; he is an athar.  His assistant is Sir Cleave.  Sir Cleave is a bodek, an undead creature who comes back from death in the abyss.  He is impressive because he kept his own mind.

When Kesto opened his shop in the morning, he found Kellock's dead body.  Kellock was a githzaria.  His face had an image of terror.  He seemed to have six slash wounds on his body.  There was a strange parchment note pinned to his shredded tunic.   He was spread across a table with books on law and order spread out beneath him and beside him.

On the ground, there's a footprint in some talc powder.  We took a vial of some of it for future reference.

[I draw a picture of the boot print in the talc, below:
             ___(|'. `\
           (|'. `\  ; |

]

We caught Kesto in a lie.  Kesto refused to be truthful.  We insisted that Kesto tell the truth and he refused to.

Mr. Small picked up Kesto by his neck and pulled back my fist to punch him.  This intimated the shit out of Kesto.  "No, no, if I don't keep my bumbox shut, he's going to come back and get me.  He'll cut off my tongue and hands so I can't cast spells."

Does this sort of being keep a bargain?
"YES!"

After much rigamorole,

"So, I actually arrived much earlier than I told the Harmonium.  When I walked in, the killer was standing beside poor Kellock.  The killer was standing there with his sword out and Kellock was already pretty much dead.  It was quite strange, this red glow flowed from Kellock's body to the killer.  I don't know what that was.  Yes, it was a sparkly red glow that creeped out of his body, slid up the sword, and made the killer glow bright for just one moment.

"After that, the killer saw me, grabbed me, and stared at me for a while.  He told me to keep quiet, or he'd come back and cut off my hands and my tongue - [choking back tears] then I couldn't cast any spells.

"The man: He was tall and strong.  A human.  Wild black hair and firey eyes.  White dust coated his black boots.  [He gives us further details so we now have a GOOD description of the killer]

"The murder weapon.  It was a longsword; I didn't get a good look at it.  He wore very fine chainmail.  No visible faction symbols."

He signs to certify that all of the above testimony the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

"He later gave us additional information: Three nearby warehouses have talc: Grossif's Paints, Pendram's Parchments & Papers, Loggue's Bath Powder."  It might be worth checking those places.

After much work, bribe a guard to take Kesto to the inn in Ironridge.  We give Kesto all the information necessary for his safe return (assuming he isn't hunted and killed by the murderer).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

We decide to go to Pendram's Parchments & Papers.  While looking for Kylie to take us there, some tiefling wearing leather pants and shirt, started dancing with a haunted look in her eyes.  She says that Mr. Small will fight the murderer (tonight) and that she saw the murderer.  "Listen to the chant cutters"  She closed her eyes and continued to dance in place.  "I dreamed of the murderer last night.  He's a barmy like me, from the house on the dead-end street.  I saw him at the bake shop across the street from the prison.  He waited as Sigil grew dark and fell asleep, watching the prison with hateful eyes.  When the watch called out "antipeak and all is well.  The killer killed the mercy killer, red death, blood.  7 slashes of a slashing sword.  He laughs and another man dies."

We ask, can you remember the deaths that happened last night?

"It started with an old human man.  I think he was a Godsman.  The killer made one massive cut across his abdomen.  There was so much blood...so much blood.  And he laughed.  He pins up parchment to the victim.  The glowing red sparlking glow from the body...that was the first one.....

"The second was a young bariar woman.  He sliced her two times, but otherwise the same.

"The next was a tiefling woman.  She had such a terrible look of fear etched on her face as he sliced her three times with his blade."

(Do you remember how he wrote on the parchment?)
"That's right, he had a quill.  He used the victim's blood to write on the parchment."

"A human man who was reading books was slashed four times.  So much the same...the terror.... the killer laughing...."

"The 5th was particularly terrible.  He was another human man, he wore red armor.  He was going down an alley.  He was slashed with one shallow cut across the forehead.  A final slash across his gut.  Five cuts in all.  The killer called out as he wrote on the parchment: 'There is no safety in order, because Chaos is everywhere!'  He took two boards and tied them together and hanged the man from it in the street.

"Last night, another guy reading books, slashed six times.  There was some little gnome who came in at the end."

(What is your name?)
"My name is Harlique."

Murder Mystery, part 1

Dear fellow party members, please find below my notes on the murder of our faction members and the member of the Godsmen.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Cast of characters

Kylie, the kinky-haired tout
Grand Factol - leader of the Athar
Hobard - the librarian of the Athar
Lord Kayleen - Factotem of the athar, our original Athar contact.  He is the
Old Favur - Member of Godsmen, dead by murder
Kellock the Grey - Member of Athar, dead by murder
Vianna the barriar - Member of Athar, dead by murder
Artema, a namer

Kuarri the Ancient - a tiefling, was nearby for the murder of Vianna, but did not have much information
Defiant Munrot - a halfling, was nearby for the murder of Viana and claims to have information, but we can not corroborate any information and he seems to only lie.  He is a non-functioning drunk.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Audience with Grand Factol

We met with our Grand Factol, who had the following to say:

"It seems that someone is murdering people who have an inclination toward law and order.  The murders have been taking place in the Lady's Ward and Lower ward.

First body found a week ago by the hardheads (police).  That was Old Favur, of the Godsmen.  He was found in his hovel in the lower ward.  This is the first murder we know of.

Our faction lost Kellock the Grey and Vianna a bariar woman.

Kellock was found near the Shattered Temple.  He was in his room."

(No information was given about Vianna the bariar, but we later learned she was killed in the Athar bunkhouse in her room.)

---------------------------------------------------------------

Speaking with Artema

Factol suggests we speak with Artema, who has heard many rumors.  Artema says the following, which is not trustworthy information according to her:

"Of the three bodies, each has had the blood drained from it.  Each crime scene has been remarkably clean of blood.  Each victim was discovered with the symbol of the Lady of Pain carved in his or her forehead.

The Godsmen have been particularly active, sending out guards near their headquarters, which is The Great Foundry.

Factol Anbar of the Godsmen has been seen in the company of very powerful looking guards.  He didn't employ such guards before the murders began.  The guvnors have offered a substantial reward for information leading to the capture of the murderer.

Some people say the murderer isn't a regular person at all.  He's a monster that's found his way into the city.

Vianna was found in an Athar bunkhouse on Shatter's Row."

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Visiting the Athar bunkhouse on Power Road.

In bunkhouse, there are 12 rooms, all very spartan.  Quarters for transient members of the faction to stay.

She was discovered in her straw-filled sleeping stall.  We find some dark brown/red brown stains in the straw.  Find a small patch of black dust under the straw.  Find a strange black feather, its tip stained with some red brown ink.

The two who were staying at the bunkhouse during the murder:
- Defiant Munrot, halfling.  At night, he saw a priest of Grozomantius.  He heard "all praise to Grozomantius!"

- Kuarri the Ancient, a tiefling.  Unfortunately, Munrut and I were in rooms quite far from Vianna's.  I couldn't hear anything, and I don't think Munrut could have either.

Kuarri found the body.  We knew she was staying there, and she didn't come out of her room.  It was terrible.  She wore a terrified expression, and it seemed she had two cuts on her on her throat.  On the night of the murder, Defiant was very very drunk.  He thinks he saw a note written on parchment near the body.

- Asking Defiant:  Why did you lie about hearing the screams?
Defiant Answer: I really heard screams.  Blood curdling screams.  One after another.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Visiting with Library Hobard

According to librarian Hobard, the feather is the feather of a vrock.  A vrock is a bird creature from the Abyss.  The librarian speculated that the blood on the feather could be Vianna's blood.  He suggested we go to A'kin, the friendly fiend.  His shop is in the lower ward.

Letter to Lord Caylean

Dear Lord Caylean,

Much has passed since we last spoke.  I hope you have met fortune unknown and unimagined by any of us.

Shortly after you receive this letter you should receive from us a large package by shipment.  It is a holy relic of the church of Grozomantius, which we took from some travelling priests we came across.  Beretta, working with some sort of mind-worm known as "The Spice of Life" and the Council of Anarchy, organized transport of it to you in Sigil.

With the ark stolen, Grozomantius is organizing a donation drive.  Unless you have a better plan, I think we should organize to frame the church.  Make it appear as them hiding the relic to drum up unwarranted support and funds.  It would obviously be hard for them to receive donations in the future once they are shown to be frauds.

Please advise us if you would like us to be a part of any future plans with the ark.  For my own part, I am eager to see this through.
